Identifying Signs:
Emotional Signs
- Excessive self consciousness/anxiety in everyday situations
- Intense worry for days, weeks, etc. before an upcoming social situation
- Extreme fear of being watched or judged by others
- Fear they will embarrass or humiliate themselves
- Fear others will notice they are nervous
Physical signs
- Red Face/blushing
- Shortness of breath
- Upset stomach, nausea, burping
- Feeling dizzy/faint
- Sweating or hot flashes
- Trembling or shaking
- Racing heart or shortness of breath
How to Help:
If your friend is having issues with social anxiety
- Focus on their feelings
- Use Distraction Techniques – suggest
- Going for a walk
- Playing a game
- Reading
- Help them reframe their thoughts – Ask:
- What is the worst or best thing that could happen?
- What is most likely to happen?
- Avoid Avoidance
- People need to face what triggers their anxiety so hiding from social situations won’t help them in the long run – For Example:
- Start small in quieter areas and work up to larger, more crowded spaces
- Start by having them just give a presentation to you or maybe a few family members then work up to peers and strangers
